September 19

What a day! Summer is ending nicely. I hope it continues. We had a nice day in grade 2. We had our pictures taken first thing this morn so everyone looked great! We worked on some more number recognition, some sight words in French, had library, we read, had gym outdoors, and finished the day with work on the sound of the week.
The kids are great with their sounds. We will use this strength to become super readers. I will start the at-home reading, with age appropriate books, in October. For now, we are going to read A LOT in class, alone, to peers, with peers, and as a class. Ask your child what they thought of the writing activity we did at the end of the day. Was it hard? Easy? Could they understand some, most, all of the words they needed to use to fill in the blanks?

I go take my kid to hockey and run a cross-country race!

Cheers!
We started the day practicing our numbers. Being able to recognize and indicate numbers I call out is taking a bit of time. If possible, have your child practice these at home. If you need correct pronunciation of the numbers: http://french.about.com/library/begin/bl-numbers.htm is one site I found.
We moved on to social studies after recess. Getting the kids to be able to comprehend sizes/distances is a tough one. We did this to try and grasp the difference in sizes of geographic concepts:

We are talking about places in Canada: Meteghan in Nova Scotia, Saskatoon and Iqualuit. The kids then did an activity about themselves:

We finished the day off with French LA. I introduced sound of the week ''ou''.  The dictée on Friday will cover this sound. We will practice it so again, do not fret!

That's it for now!

It was another nice day in grade 2. We finished off our social studies activity. We also spent a little time in the computer lab working on patterns for math. The kids don't seem like they'll have any trouble with this unit. At the end of the day I read a story called Freckle Juice. It is about a boy named Andrew and how he really wants to have freckles. A mean girl in his class hears of this and offers up her family's ''secret recipe'' for 50 cents. Andrew accepts and after he mixes the ketchup, mustard, onion, grape juice, olive oil, mayonnaise, salt and pepper, and drinks it, he feels terrible. He ends up missing a day of school and never does get freckles. His teacher, Miss Kelly, lets him know that he looks handsome without them. Moral of the story is to be happy with who you are and accept what you can't change. The kids had to write 2-3 sentences before drawing and colouring a picture about the story. Have a conversation about this story if you like.

Have a nice evening.
