March 7

Hello all. Today we did some testing of sight words, some reading, some writing in English and in French, some self-assessment of behaviour and work ethic, and we played a bunch.

Here are the kids reading to each other in French. This is leveled reading and each student gets a chance to read a short book with pictures that help with vocabulary and comprehension.

Below is Liam reading to the class. He is reading a book that the students heard yesterday. It's called Too Many Toys. The students had to write a minimum of 5 sentences and then draw/colour a picture to go with it.

After music we finished working in our English spelling booklets. Most finished however, some have been absent and needed to catch up. Could you please ensure that your child finishes and brings back this blue book? In your child's agenda you will find two permission forms that need to be signed and returned. If I had all of them tomorrow morning, that would be sooooooo sweet:) In the agenda, you will also find three math questions. Have your child do them right there in the agenda and, for the two subtractions, use tens and ones.

March 6

Today we did some science/math work. In the morning, the kids finished up their odd/even numbered fish, decorated the box I asked them to bring, but didn't blog about, then used the fishing rod I gave them with magnetic bait. They then had to fish out some numbers and add, subtract, say the numbers.

Many didn't do the homework from last night, so please refer to yesterday's posting so you can see if your child "get's" the subtraction concept of borrowing.

Cheers:)

March 5

Today was a long hard day of mathematics. Specifically, subtraction with borrowing.

Let's say this is a ten: ---------- and this is a one: -

 3 6       ----------     - - - - - -  Now subtract 9! Kids can't so they need to use a ten to make 10 ones.
-   9       ----------                    They actually cross out the ten and draw in 10 ones. Next, they subtract
----------                     9 ones by crossing them out. They count how many ones are left and
write that in the ones column. They count the tens left and write that                                                      in the tens column.

Looks like this:

For homework, have them try these:

A)   2 8
     -    5

B)   4 2
     -    6

I have booked the pool from 10-12 on March 22 for all of the grade 2s. We will be bussing there and need a 1:4 supervisor to student ratio in the pool. I need 4 parents to help on the day. Let me know. I will send permission forms when I find time to do it.

We are going to Covenant Christion School to watch a play put on by their junior high. That is in the afternoon of Thursday, March 21. I will send permission form later.
